Record Selections and news
DJ Paul Tarpey

'25 O' Clock in the morning/ Liquidised Demons' Ri-Ra ( all city records)   12"- A tough twelve from Sherwood collaborator and scary eire front man Ri- Ra,
with a strong gutter ragga flow... like a poke in the eye. Out on all city
records. Available at empire in Limerick too. Highly recommended.

'At the grassroots of dub' King Tubby meets the upsetter (studio16 records) LP.
Very well known these days and trendy to quote. This soundclash between two
masters transcends lipservin heads and booms round the heart. Great echo
clicks!

'Watch how the people dancing' unity sounds from the london dancehall 1986-1989'   (Honest Jons Records) LP A truly excellent collection of basic digital reggae developed from the sleng teng riddim in London's 86 era... Proper sounds and proper knowledge in the sleevenotes too! Check all city for this

'Middle Fingers' Baby Chum (Up records) LP- Last years jump up anthem deep bass, nuff chat and that asian sample business. Voted the most annoying record of last year by the bar staff in Mickeys due to a whistle thing.
'Patti Duke' Cloud One (PNP Records) 12"- A low riddim funk track with spacey disco bits on a classic disco label. Early rappin by Spoonie G hijacked this beat 4 one of DJ Meks favourites.
'Wake up and make love to me' Ian Dury (Stiff Records) LP- The blockheads were one of the tightest session bands ever and this is a running bass lick all time favourite.
'Papa was a rolling stone' The Temptations (from album all directions Tamala Motown)- Major major classic everybody knows it but never listens to it thus an old favourite in Mickeys.
'You talk that talk" Ammons Stitt Spencer Freeman , title track  (Prestige Records) LP- Cool flowing jazz with great drums for the early part of the Soundpolicy Sunday Showdown. Other favourites Grant Greens live album (thanks Phil) and Monk Higgins stuff.
"The rub" George and Gwen Mc Crae from the President LP " Together" - A funk groover with a great James Bond guitar bit. Sampled by the Coup years ago.
"Express yourself" The New York Community Choir 12" mix (RCA Records) - The best song I got this year. A long driving funk disco smash from 1977. About 125 bpm and 12 minutes long. If you are drinking at half ten on Fridays at the spot, this is what I'm serving.
"Generate Power" Photon Inc Wild Pitch mix (Strictly Rhythm)- Electronic building house music as my renegade soundwave records are resting. Big thanks to DJ Tom Frawley for support on this tip.
"The Rocker" Thin Lizzy from the vagabonds of the western world 1973 (Decca)- A full on rock song with a fuck off solo. 100% Irish.
"Spread out" (instrumental) "Ya playin' youself" accapella - Enligh 'beat' guy Adam Best made his own 'disco' equiptment for "spread out" on his wall of sound album from 1970. Sounds good with Jeru....well this week anyway....
Huge thanks on the record collecting tip to DJ Phil, Phil the Fox, Tom Frawley and always DJ Hazo

Black Soul Spring 10

INNACITY TEARS- illdependents producer Hazos track from last year is currently the underground track of the moment in Germany! A few copies left in Blackspot.
MAMMY HOT DADDY COOL- big youth: A cool reggae ska number off the (unfortunately) trendy future worldfunk compilation album available all over but £15 for two tracks of worth is as usual…….. sad
NUTHIN LIKE THUNDER- Willis Jackson old dancefloor jazz that people know from somewhere (not everythings off an advert you know!). On the incredible sound of Giles Peterson.
ESSENTIAL MIX FRANCOIS K. C.D - Original classic New york DJs selection on what todays youth call house….They had to make it up back then lads! I wish those days came back as a big long ad on TV

SCRATCH MASTERS PART 2- Strictly bizness. There is a b-boy in Manchester releasing solid old hip-hop and his own mad stuff. His name is Dave the Ruf and if you send him an S.A.E. at ruf beats, PO Box 118, Altrincham, Chesire WA15 6AX, Uk. He will send you a list of cool stuff. He was trying to get rid of a pair of trainers, the last time I checked,  ruf beats
COME INTO MY SPACE - Divine Styler. Who doesn’t like DJ Shadow? This guys got a sound very like Shadows classic stuff. Empire Music (O'Connell Street) couldn’t sell this at full price so into the cheap box it goes….. Wrong! Ask them have they anymore the price means you are down one vodka and red bull.

Why Limerick is Soulful
I spend far too much money on records and if I actually had any real money I would probably end up giving it to Blackspot. I first went there five years ago and found an incredible Bongo band album in mint condition for less then a fiver. The fact that it contains ‘Apache’ and is actually worth £80 means 'Doc' now reads Record Collector a lot closer. There is no category of music that is not represented fron irish showband classics to current drum and bass 12’s. You may enter with some notion of checking the old jazz selection and leave with a re-issue of a rastafarian speed metal band as I did once. This is the beauty of the place. I also like the Sonic Youth NY Artnoise CD compilation in the shape of a hoover bag. I get reggae current releases on 7 inch with a big hole in the middle and horrible 70’s rock band albums for sampling. If Doc’s shop was in London he would be riding that cool scooter he has in the window proudly like Jimmy Cliff. Instead he fights the good fight in Limerick, go buy your ammunition there.
Blackspot records is at 12 Wickham Street, Limerick tel: (061) 412570
