Shannon, the most westerly international
airport in Europe, was originally selected in 1935 by the Irish Government, with advice from U.S. and European
aviation experts, as the prime location for technical transit operations by all North Atlantic carriers. |
Up to the mid 1950's,
some 50% of all North Atlantic passengers transited Shannon. It was this background, coupled with the continuing
growth in terminal passenger traffic, that enabled Shannon to build up the outstanding range of facilities and
services, which are now available to all those carriers who utilise it for their technical transits.
|
|
|
Shannon has one of the best weather records
of all European airports and with its temperate climate, near sea level location (field elevation 47 ft.) and obstruction-free
3,200, runway, offers maximum take-off conditions, Winter and Summer. |
Freeport status permits
receipt, storage, delivery and transit of goods at the airport without formal customs documentation. This means
that the carriers enjoy facilities such as customs-free delivery of aircraft parts and catering provisioning equipment.
|
|
|
Technical facilities at the airport conform
to the highest International Civil Aviation Organisation. Ground support facilities include specialised handling
agencies, for both scheduled and supplemental carriers, hydrant fueling systems and well-equipped, in-flight catering
service, all with 24 hr availability. |
The Development has
transformed Shannon with the New Departures area blending into the Arrivals area to create a stunning architectural
building of glass, limestone and concrete.
All amenities have been centralised under one roof, focused on providing
a comfortable and stress free environment for air traveller and airport visitor alike.
|
|
|
Airlines at Shannon provide services
to over 60 destinations throughout the world.
In addition, the technical transit programmes of many airlines continue to add significant value to Shannon Airport's
commercial activities. |

Airport Facilities |
The apron at Shannon has twenty-four aircraft parking positions. Fifteen of these
positions at the new terminal building are serviced by airbridges leading directly and at the same level to the
spacious transit lounge and the duty free shop. Entrance to the pier building from the remaining parking positions,
which are serviced by buses is at ground level. From there you can access the transit lounge by escalator. |
Proximity of the pier building and duty free shops/U.S. Immigration Pre-inspection
enable passengers to deplane/enplane within the normal operational transit time. The airbridges service aircraft
parked nose in or parallel to the Pier Building |
