The Tara Brooch was found on Bettystown Beech in Co Louth, Ireland in the early 1800s by some children. A Jeweller called Waterhouse acquired it from a watchmaker who in turn had got it from the mother of the children who found it. Mr.Waterhouse made some copies of the brooch and it was he who named the brooch The Tara Brooch. In 1850 Mr. Waterhouse took the copies and showed them to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert at Windsor Castle. Delighted by it the Queen bought two copies.
