The
mission in Makiungu was founded in 1942 by Fr Tim Hanly who, at the age
of 95, now lives in well-earned retirement at Pallottine house in
Thurles; the parish priest, Fr James Amasi, is the son of one of the
mission's catechists.
Fathers Eugene Obaso
and Andrew Kymbia are the two Pallottine priests who have succeeded Fr
James Amasi in Makiungu, and they cover an area that has ten outstation
churches where the local people run the parish councils and provide
instruction in the faith.
Makiungu
lies in a very dry, arid region, but the Pallottine sisters, having
managed to lay on water and provide all the necessary amenities, have
built a secondary school for girls, a tremendous development in the
area, which contributes enormously to the status of women there.
Despite
the difficulties they encounter, the parishioners have numerous projects
to improve their lives, and use every possible technique to beat the
recurring droughts.
They have used
the donations that we send them from our annual collections very wisely,
and have helped in the education of local student
s, so please donate as
generously as you can.
