School History

St. Attracta's N.S. Charlestown.

St. Attracta's is the only national school in Charlestown, Co. Mayo. There are 4 full time teachers and one remedial teacher shared with Curry N.S. Co. Sligo. Most of the 99 pupils come from the town of Charlestown and indeed only about 10 per cent of the pupils are transported by bus. Our 99 pupils are made up of 52 boys and 47 girls. Along with the ordinary academic subjects, sports figure highly at St. Attracta's. Gaelic football is played both by the girls and boys. Last year was a very successful year for our girls' football. Also, last year the Connaught branch of the Rugby Union organised coaching for every child from third class to sixth class. At the moment our second to sixth classes are being taught the skills of Gaelic football and every Tuesday half of our school go swimming to Claremorris Swimming Pool. We are well served to meet the technological age. We have 11 PC's around our school. This, plus a good selection of software, is due in no small way to our very active Parents' Association.
