St. Brigid's Hurling Club

Intermediate Champions 2000

On October 8th, 2000, a panel of fine men from Dalystown entered Cusack Park, looked upon by the vast majority as the underdogs, some predicting a-point-a-man defeat.  Little did they know the size of the hearts in these men or what they would do and sacrifice for their club, how much this title would mean to their families and friends that came to support them that day.  It is amazing to this day how anyone can pin the label of underdogs on a St.Brigid's team entering a final, for any time they have, they have been proven wrong.

This day was no exception.  With no little skill and determination, St.Brigid's notched up a five point lead before the interval.  The vital first ten minutes of the second half, when we faced a strengthening breeze, proved to be the cornerstone of a great victory, with excellent skill and support play keeping a gallant St.Oliver Plunkett's team at bay.  The opposition mounted a serious charge in the final quarter levelling the game in the dying seconds.  But St.Brigid's had one last attack that was to seal our victory, a fine point from "The Bangy" Gunning.  The celebrations were immense. To finish off a great day in the club's history, the players and the supporters united in song after Johnny Maloney, our captain, received the Cup.
