SAINT BRIGID'S HURLING CLUB NOTES

1st October 2000

INTERMEDIATE FINAL

On Sunday next, October 8th, in Cusack Park, Mullingar, we will contest the final of the Intermediate Championship. This will be the culmination of our most successful year since 1995 when we last won this championship. Our opponents on Sunday next will be St. Oliver Plunketts who came through the league stages of the championship undefeated. They will be strong favourites to lift this title considering that when our paths last met in May in the first game in the league series, they defeated us comprehensively.

Just if and how much the gap between us has narrowed is difficult to know but since then we have only been defeated once. Training has gone well for us under the guidance of Rom Deegan and Ger Kenny and our panel of players has strengthened considerably since then.

Saint Brigids were always a proud club and one thing we can be confident of is that whatever fifteen or so players that get the opportunity to take the field in the saffron and white on Sunday next will not be found wanting in commitment and determination.

County finals are not easily reached.

All we can do is to wish full twenty five members of the panel and the five selectors the best of luck.

Coming from an area more associated with football, we do not enjoy the profile of some of some of our more illustrious footballing neighbours so we would love to see people from Milltownpass, Rochfortbridge, Tyrrellspass and Dalystown , the areas we represent coming to Cusack Park to give up a cheer on Sunday.

UNDER 16 B FINAL

Hopefully, it is the first leg of a double but on Saturday last September 30th in Robinstown, we were victorious in the under 16 B final. As I mentioned previously, this is an excellent panel of players who have been together since under 12 having won their respective championships at each level and on Saturday added the under16 title with an excellent victory over Crookedwood on a scoreline of 2-11 to 1-5.This team has it all , strength, size and an abundance of skill and with a bit of commitment could go on to make their mark in hurling in the county. The panel was as follows, Larry Poynton, Michael Geraghty, Michael Malone, Paul McCarty, Seamus Faulkner, Padraig Bennett, Denis Glennon, Ivan Oxley, Dermot Faulkner, Thomas Geraghty, Drew Morgan, David Glennon, Robert Kenny, Shane Gammell, Andrew Devine, Gavin Hoey, Kenneth Early, John Peppard, Shane Hoey, and Daithi Eighan.Well done and our appreciation also to the mentors behind this victorious team, Sean and Mary Gallagher, Niall Seery and John Maloney.

For the final new socks and togs were provided by local businessmen Timmy O Connor and Jimmy Gallagher and afterwards the meal provided for the team in The Bridge House Rochfortbridge was sponsored by local building contractor Martin Maloney. The club wishes to express their gratitude to the above for their generosity.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to Tyrrellspass Senior Footballers on reaching the county semi final.

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS

Happy birthday to Phyllis Deegan, one of our most loyal supporters, on reaching another milestone in her life. They say life begins at it.
