Intermediate Hurling Championship
On Saturday evening last we had our first outing in the Intermediate Championship. The venue was St. Lomans and the opposition was Turin. Despite hurling well for the hour we had to give second best to a lively Turin side. We created numerous chances but unfortunately on the evening we were unable to turn possession into scores. However there were a number of fine individual performances and with a little more sharpness up front we could reverse the outcome in our next game. The final score was Turin 2-10 St.Brigids 2-5. The team and substitutes used were as follows Declan Hogan, John Maloney, Noel Gavin, Adrian Gallagher, Damien Loran, Gordon Eighan, Philip Sheridan, Kevin Connell, Bernard Kiernan, Paul Brady, Pat Hayes, Jay Faulkner, Kenneth Gunning, Niall Seery and Jonathan Sheridan, Michael Geraghty and Eamon Gallagher.
Tangled Web Tournament
We played Longford Slashers in the first round of the above tournament on Wednesday evening last in Longford. Unfortunately after a hard fought encounter we were beaten on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-6. We play Ballymahon in the next round this week.
The late Albert Colgan
On Wednesday week last the area was shocked to hear of the death of Albert Colgan Although suffering from indifferent health for the last few years it came as a great shock to hear of his sudden death while at work. Albert was a true legend in hurling circles both within the county of Westmeath and beyond. Involved with St Brigids since its foundation in the fifties the highlights of his career were the winning of our first junior championship in 1964 and the glorious era of the late sixties early seventies when we won the famous three in a row senior county hurling championships. For many years he made the number three jersey his own. He was also played on the county senior team for numerous years. When he retired from hurling he continued to serve the club as an officer including a term as club chairman. Although not actively involved in the club in recent years he remained steadfastly loyal to the saffron and white and there was no one more proud when we had our recent championship successes at Junior and Intermediate level. To Tommy, Anne and Frank and the rest of his family and friends we offer our sympathies.
The late Jim Fox
The club wished to offer its sympathies to the family of the late Jim Fox Gibbonstown. A former St. Brigids hurler Jim played with the club during the late fifties and sixties and was a member of the junior championship and league winning team of 1964. May he rest in peace.
The late Ben Kelly
The club wishes to express its sympathy with the Kelly family Mullingar and the Oliver Plunketts Hurling Club on the death of Ben Kelly.
