Under Age

During the past week the under age hurling leagues commenced and we had games at fe 12 and fe 16. We were due to play at fe 14 also but unfortunately we were unable to field.

Fe 12

On Friday last our fe 12 team traveled to Delvin to play our first game in the under 12 league. This was a journey into the unknown as half of the team had never played a competitive hurling game before. They had however been playing indoor hurling over the Winter under the guidance of Nollaig McEntegart and were keenly looking forward to putting what they had been practicing to use. There were also a number of "veterans" from the team that reached last years fe 12 final.

There was very little between both sides and the result could have gone either way but after a very enjoyable had fought match we emerged victorious on a scoreline of 5-0 to

4 – 2. We wish to thank Delvin for the sporting manner in which the match was played.

Playing his first ever hurling match as goalkeeper Niall Brady never put a foot wrong, making a number of excellent saves and clearances. In front of him Damien Moran carried on from last year and was rock solid with excellent long deliveries from defence on both his right and left side. Each side of him were two newcomers Ronan Flanagan and Jake Byrne and they hurled as if they had been there for years soaking up some tremendous pressure particularly in the last few minutes of the match.. The half back line of Sean Deegan, Dara Coyne and Aiden Fallon hurled well throughout harrying and hassling the Delvin half forward line. Our centrefield was one of our most experienced lines with Kevin Morgan and Daniel Crombie using the experience gained last year with telling effect and providing a plentiful supply of the ball to our forwards. In the half forward line Ciaran Daly played his heart out despite starting the game with an injured hand and had to be replaced by whole hearted James Gonoud at half time. Conor Slevin covered every inch of the forward line and never stopped trying despite getting a bad knock while making a vital block down. Ace goal poacher Brendan Keegan started at centre half forward but was later moved into full forward where he scored two very good goals. Christopher Coyne whose strength and determination caused constant problems for the Delvin defence scored two goals and had a hand in every St Brigids attack. The ever lively Jason Feery chased every ball and was rewarded with a vital goal. At number fifteen Ben Gavin also playing his first competitive hurling game had a hand in every attack and very unlucky not to get on the scoreboard. The rest of the panel were as follows Niamh McEntegart, Clodagh McEntegart, Shane Newman and Marie Morgan

The team was as follows David Wright, John McNamara, Michael Malone, Shane Gleeson, Kevin Geraghty, Kevin Reid, Andy Devine, David Glennon, Damien Keegan, Aaron Gavin, Drew Morgan, Derek Gallagher, John Peppard, Connor Daly and Benjamin Palmer.

The organiser of this game is Paul Gavin whose father John Paul was a native of Dalystown. John Paul passed away last September and Paul has generously donated a cup in his memory with the hope of making make this tournament game between St. Brigids and local hurling team there an annual event . All players will be notified of travel arrangements before then.
