Chinese New Year

The oldest and most important festival in China is the Spring Festival or Chinese New Year, as we know it.  The Spring festival celebrates the earth coming back to life and the start of ploughing and sowing.

Everyone in China starts to get ready for the festival during the last few days of the last moon.  Houses are cleaned, debts paid, hair cut and new clothes bought.  Doors are decorated with vertical scrolls of characters on red paper.  In many homes insence is burned -- and also in the temples as a mark of respect to ancestors.

The children in Junior Infants celebrate Chinese New Year -- the Year of the Snake.
Can you see the wonderful dragon that they made?  Some of the children even dressed up in Chinese clothes.
2001 is the year of the "Snake Sleeping in Winter".  This is a year for preparation.  It is connected with deep winter and difficulties to overcome.

It is also a year in which it is important to be faithful to family and friends.  Be prepared to be a really good friend and make an extra effort to help when someone is in need.

Happy Year of the Snake to Everyone.
