Report:

Beaten on the double in both league and championship last year, Fenagh St. Caillins gained part of their revenge when they defeated Melvin Gaels in a fast and furious opening Masonite Senior league encounter.

Melvin Gaels started the stronger side and where 2 points up before Fenagh responded with a point from Brendan Flynn.

Melvin Gaels goalkeeper, Gareth Phelan, made the first of many fine saves when he stopped an Enda McKiernan goal effort, however McKiernan collected the breaking ball and quickly fisted it over the bar to leave the teams all square. Shortly afterwards Pat Guckian scored a tremendous goal leaving Fenagh in front.

That lead was quickly wiped out when Daniel Branley fielded a high ball at the edge of the Fenagh goalmouth and buried it past keeper Paul Gill.

Both teams exchanged 3 points with the Fenagh Scores coming from Joe Connefry and two converted frees from Ciaran Duignan. And just on the stroke of half time, Dara Baraden scored a point to leave Fenagh ahead at 1-6 to 1-5.

That was the end of the match as a competition as Fenagh totally dominated the second half, scoring 3 points to the Gaels' 1. And indeed it would have been a much higher margin of victory for Fenagh but for the heroics of Melvin Gaels keeper Phelan who was in tremendous form pulling of several terrific saves. The game ended after Pat Guckian was sidelined for a second bookable offence. Fenagh finished victors on a scoreline of 1-9 to 1-6.
