St Catherine's Vocational School

Killybegs

About Us

St. Catherine's Vocational School is the only second level school in Killybegs. It is non-denominational and co-educational. It is one of eleven schools administered by County Donegal Vocational Education Committee. It caters for just under 400 students and has a teaching staff of 28. Our principal is Mr. Joe Ward and vice-principal is Mr. Frank Mc Ghee.

Until 1972 secondary education in Killybegs was provided by a private school, St. Mary's, run by Mr. Eugene O'Rourke. When St. Mary's closed the parents and local community set up the Killybegs Community School which was financed entirely by local contributions. In 1973 the Department of Education granted a Vocational School to Killybegs which opened in September of that year. Initially, prefabricated classrooms were provided and the school opened for first, second and third year students. As the numbers began to grow, a Senior Cycle was provided. In 1974 Mr. Joe Ward was appointed Principal.

The present two-storey building was opened in 1986 providing first-class facilities for students and teachers. The school includes a Gymnasium/Community Hall which is jointly owned by the local community and Donegal V.E.C. This is used by the school during the day and by the community in the evenings, at weekends and during school holidays.
