This strengthened vocational dimension is achieved through the provision of three Link Modules - Preparation for Work, Work Experience and Enterprise Education. In the course of the programme students and their teachers are encouraged to look beyond the confines of the school to establish links with business and local community organisations. Those students who meet the Department of Education qualifying criteria are awarded credits in the Leaving Certificate.

Comenius 1 European Education Project

Léargas - The Exchange Bureau contributes to the processes by which the worlds of education, training and human resource development adapt to meet the challenges of the 21st century. It enables and supports people, organisations and systems to innovate and to harness the benefits of transnational partnership in the context of European Union and bilateral programmes.

From 1996 to 1999 thirty students and a number of teachers from the school participated in a European Education Project on the theme "Fishing Industries and Traditions". The project was co-ordinated by Mr. Ward and Mr. Murphy and involved partner schools in Norway, Italy, Portugal and Greece. The pupils involved benefited enormously from taking part in the project. On a local level they gained first-hand knowledge of the fishing industry. They visited the local fish processing plants, net factories, boatyards etc. and have seen for themselves the part played by each of these in the fishing industry. They have seen the job opportunities that will be available to them when they leave school. On an international level they have been in contact with students and teachers from the four other countries involved and have seen the problems facing the fishing industry in each of these countries. Students worked on a cross-curricular project involving such subjects as Science, English, Geography, Computers, Art and Technical Drawing. They learned to use the Internet and to send E-mail and fax messages to their fellow students abroad.

The project involved teachers from Greece, Italy, Portugal and Norway visiting Killybegs as well as visits by our teachers to each of the other countries. The European Project had very positive effects on the school during the three years and strengthened the links between the school and local industry.
