On the 21st of May we began our project on
observing butterflies from the larval stage to adult butterfly stage. The larvae
were in small containers with air holes on the lid. One centimetre of food was
placed at the bottom of the container. We got a butterfly each and gave them a
name. Some of the names were amusing such as ‘Homer’ and ‘Cater Pee’.
The
larvae grew rapidly and developed into caterpillars. Eventually they attached
themselves to the lids and formed a cocoon . At this stage they are referred to
as chrysalides. On the 6th of June we moved them into the butterfly hatching
house. This had special windows that enabled us to observe them. It was fun
watching the butterflies hatch.
We released them into the wild on June the
19th.The butterflies liked the butterfly patch we planted ,full of bright sweet
smelling flowers. We hope some butterflies will return to our butterfly patch
this year.
