St. Columba's is fortunate to be surrounded
by a large green area.
We have embarked on a ten year plan to create natural habitats
for flora and fauna.
This will enable our
children to observe animal and plant life in its natural
environment and enable us to cultivate a love and respect for
nature.
The project began by creating an enclosed bog-land area with its own pond, wild flower area and rockeries.
The physical work was done
by parents and teachers. The Spring of 2000 has brought our own
frog spawn.
This has been enthuasiastically welcomed by our children.
We also introduced our Garden Buddies scheme. This involved children from the middle classes introducing the infant classes to the wonders of the garden.
It has been our policy for many years to collect tree seeds in Autumn. These are placed in containers of sand and those that germinate are planted in pots.
In the Spring of 2000 a large number of native deciduous trees were set in the grounds.
In the Spring of 1999 we replaced a native hedgerow .
