Scoil Niomh Fionán

Scoil Naomh Fionán first opened its doors in September 1992. It replaced three existing schools in the Drung end of the parish of Iskaheen/Upper Moville. The schools involved in the amalgamation were Drung NS built 1903, Clunelly NS built in 1908 and St. Colm's NS Clar, built in 1963. Conditions in the two older schools in particular were very sub-standard and so the idea of a new school to cater for the area was first mooted in the late sixties. After long and protracted negotiations and several deputations to the Department of Education in Dublin work finally began in 1990 and the school was completed in 1991.

Scoil Naomh Fionán is situated in probably one of the most beautiful settings in the country on an elevated site overlooking Lough Foyle with the hills of Derry stretching away in the distance. The building consisted of seven spacious classrooms, a general purposes room, staff-room, medical room, staff cloak room, two safe stores, PE store and cleaner's storeroom. Since September 1994 the medical room has been used by the Learning Support Teacher and in September 1999 one of the stores was converted into an office for the school secretary. In December a double prefab was erected to accommodate a class and the learning support teacher and the medical room is now used by the principal.

When the school opened in 1991, there were 8 teachers on the staff and 207 pupils on roll. We now have a staff of 10 - Administrative Principal, 8 Class teachers and Learning Support Teacher based in the school but shared with St. Boden's National School Culdaff. We have an enrolment of 214 pupils.
