Welcome

Hi there and welcome to St. Maelruain's C.of I. N.S. web site.

Our school opened on 1st July 1977 with 20 girls and 24 boys on the roll. There had been no school in Tallaght for the previous 50 years and the original building was in use as a hall. St. Mary's Priory in Tallaght Village was kind enough to lend us two classrooms to get started. It was envisaged in 1979 that the school would be located in its own grounds by 1980.

Parents of the children atttending the school spent long and arduous hours getting permission to build a school of our own, then getting the land and finally the finances required.

In 1982 the new school was officially opened in Jobstown with 89 children on the roll and 3 teachers. The school is a modern, bright building with a large multi-purpose room and we plan to build on four extra units in the near future.

There are 96 children enrolled at the moment and a permanent teaching staff of 4 increasing to 5 in September 2001. We have a shared Learning Support Teacher, a part time Home/School Liaison Coordinator and also a tennis coach. Our ancillary staff includes a classroom assistant and a caretaker, both thanks to the West Tallaght FAS Scheme.

We place a lot of emphasis on hands-on experience for the children, going out on lots of field trips and taking pride in our environment within the grounds and in the wider locality.

As you will see by the contents of the web pages we really do get up to quite a lot of activities in our wee school. We hope that you will enjoy browsing and we'd love to hear from you!
