The Martello Tower
In the early 1800s Napoleon of France was at war with England. The British Government felt that there was a danger that Napoleon would invade Ireland. Martello Towers were built around the East Coast of Ireland as a look-out and for defensive purposes. In North Dublin there are 12 Martello Towers. It is said that from a Martello Tower you can always see another tower. From Balbriggan you can see the tower on Shenick Island in Skerries.
