My roots

My mam was born at home in February 1952. She was the only one in her family born at home. She lived in 28 Craoibhin Park for twenty five years she lived there. Then she moved to 69 Bath Road where I was born and my sister Cathy was born too. After ten years we moved to Ashfield rise, now I have been living there for three years now.

Life back then was sometimes easy and sometimes hard. My mam had loads of friends who were all older than her. The clothes were all in the sixties. Music was all in the seventies. School was hard and she used to get the belt or the whip and food was the same as now.

Stories and songs were different back then. They used to sing and tell stories about ghosts around the fire and they used to cook food on the fire.

If they had any problems they told their parents if they had any or they could have talked to their nanny or grandfather.

When they were younger transport was bad. They had horses and carts and even sometimes they would have to walk.

When they were young they played loads of games e.g. giney and marbles , marbles was not popular, giney was popular.

She had loads of pets as she was younger.

MY NANNY AND MY GRANDAD

My Nanny and Grandad were born in Dublin in the early 1930's. They lived in the city centre in Dublin. My Grandad lived in a flat above a shop. My Nanny lived around the corner from him. Like my Mam and Dad, they lived around the corner from each other too.

They didn't have as many clothes as we have now. They ate all home-made food. They both went to separate schools, they listened to music on the radio. They were able to stay out with their friends till around twelve at night, because nobody would kidnap them. Not like it is today.

They had fairytale stories like we have, but they didn't have as many songs. There was a few of them, not as many as there are today. My Mam remembers songs that she knew when she was a child. There was one called "By a tiny stream" and a lot more.

I don't think they had many problems to deal with when they were children. The problems they did have got sorted out.

They used trams, bikes and their feet before they married and they got a car when they did marry. They still used their feet, even though they had a car. They got a house with a front and back garden. They had five children. My uncle Paul, my Dad, my uncle Nicholas, my uncle Maurice and my aunty Barbara. They also had twelve lovely grandchildren.

They enjoyed many happy years in that house. I hope there is a lot more to come for my Nanny.

My Grandad passed away in 1988. Before I was born so I never got to see him. I have a picture of him in my house so I know what he looks like.

Before she was married my Nanny's surname was Kelly. That's the same as my Mam, her name was Kelly before she got married, now her surname is Fagan.

My Nanny still lives in the same house that she and my Grandad lived in. I hope she always will.

Brian Laverty was born in Portadown. He had very good friends. He had not much back then. Listened to county western music. He went to St.Patrick school in Dungannon. Solved all his problems himself because times were different back then. I look at photographs from when he was a child. He had no transport so he walked all the time. He played football all the time. Day or night.

John Lennon.

I interviewed my dad's friend John Lennon. John was born in 1950 in Kilkenny, Thomastown. He was born at home not in a hospital. His mam and dad were big fans of the Beatles , so they named him after John Lennon the singer. When he was small, his friends were just like now. There weren't that many bullies than now. His family was not rich so they only had old shabby clothes. For some food was rich but theirs were hand picked it was lovely. Music was brilliant (to them)!

In those days Elvis was the hit. John said Elvis"Rubberneckin" was the best. (He must have liked him a lot). But when it came to school, no one liked it a lot!

John said it was very very strict. The things you would get hit with were cane , a leather belt, a ruler, and a stick. God I would hate school then. I asked him about the stories and he said. "There was a man who played cards by himself down in Kilkenny. One day he was playing by himself and dropped a club and he bent down to get it and saw the Devils foot and got up and saw all of him and , then went through the roof and theres still a hole in the roof today". The style in those days was horrific "Teddy boys "God!!

When he had some problems he talked to his best friends because he knew that he could trust them. When he was travelling somewhere or anywhere his transport was the Dublin Bus.When my mum young she was a dancer. The music was from Five Star. Her Heart was almost broken when they broke up. She still has all the trophies she won and the newspapers she was in she was called Lovely Linda in one of the newspapers. I remember looking at a photo of my mum in the beach sitting on a rock and I look just like her and in the background you can see my aunties and uncles and they made about 100 sand castles.

My roots

My Mam was born on 21/9/1962 in the Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. She lived at 6 Fulham Street with her 14 brothers and sisters and parents. Life was good when she was growing up. Plenty of friends not many clothes food was all home-made. Music was super {yeah right}. She loved school except the cane. She went to ST.Peter and Paul's J.N.S and later the Tec. She remembers the song "Dublin the rare auld times". When they had problems they all went out to work because they didn't have much money. The only transport they had was walking and cycling.

She loves having a big family and her brothers and sisters are like her best friends. She started working as a strawberry picker when she was 10. Then she worked in a factory where the make clothes and shoes then in 1990 my mam married my Dad, he is a Butcher. Two years later they had me then 3 years later they had my brother Gary.

This is an interview with my mam about her life as a kid and an adult.
