Students of St. Patrick's Classical School have staged
plays, annually, since 1975 including the four major Shakespearean tragedies-:
Macbeth, Hamlet, Othello and King Lear.
They
have also staged plays by Brendan Behan and Brian Friel and in 1980 devised
a play of their own tracing the history of 'St.Pats'. The actors who participate
in the productions are selected from 4th and 5th year students in the school.
Female roles are played by students from St. Michael's, Loreto Convent
and/or St. Joseph's, Mercy Convent.
Since
1975, teacher of English, Mr.Richard Ball has produced and directed all
the plays staged in the school and Mr.Tommy McArdle of R.T.E has acted
as production adviser. Set design is by Art teacher, Mr.Daniel Ahern.
The
school does not have a permanent performance area/ stage so the construction
of the auditorium (stage and seating ) is the responsibility annually of
the school's Woodwork Department.
The
productions are for enjoyment and education and over the years each and
every one has been received with great acclaim by staff, students and parents. |
