Transition Year

The Transition Year offers students an opportunity:

  • To engage in independent, self-directed learning.
  • To develop general, technical and academic skills.
  • To mature and develop without the pressure of an examination.

Transition Year (TY) offers students aged 15/16 the opportunity to take the time away from exam subjects in the class room and give them more practical experiences. Recent studies show that students who do transition year are more likely to do well in the Leaving Certificate and more likely to get a degree.

TY offers students the chance to enjoy experience based learning rather than going straight from an exam situation to another. The repertoire of projects being undertaken by the transition year group 2005/2006 include:

  • Build a Bank
  • Television production
  • Mini company project
  • ECDL
  • Edmund Rice Award
  • President's Award
  • Community work experience as well as traditional work experience
Most of Transition Year is based on project work which you wouldn't normally do if you went straight into fifth year.

We are currently in the final term of Transition Year 2005 / 2006. We, the students, have enjoyed the experience so far and would recomend transition year to other students. The remaining part of the year will be spent on ECDL modules and fire safety courses.
