About the
The Spinning Wheel. This is a friendly old country pub and has been voted
one of the top hundred pubs in Ireland and deservedly so. The first thing
you notice as you arrive in the town is the vintage 1939 tractor sitting
outside.
As you enter its ancient doors, the place is awash with antiques from
bygone days. There are cartwheels, old bakelite radios spinning wheels
harnesses, tamps, accordions, tons of brick ?a ? brac and rustic artifacts.
T mere are two huge stone fireplaces and the whole interior is done in
stripped stone masonry with exposed brick walls, flagged floors and a
massive solid piece of timber making up the splendid warm bar.
There are plenty of snugs and alcoves and there's a smart intimate backroom
with a pool table. The pub has great atmosphere and is more like a museum
which is unique and imaginative.
More on Castletownroche
Half way between Mallow and Fermoy, a pretty little place.
Close by are the graceful remains of Bidgetown Abbey, a 13th century
Augustinian foundation. The house called Anne's Grove (3km NW), the
home of Mr and Mrs Patrick Anesley, has delightful gardens which are
open to the public. They are of the supremely romantic turn-of-the century
style. The walled gardens and the azalea groves are glorious in most
seasons, but connoissurs are most impressed by the water garden, laid
out along a small tributary river, with winding riverside walks.
