Ireland in the 19th Centruy

There were many groups of nationalists that wanted to bring freedom to Ireland. Robert Emmet organised a rebellion in 1803 but unfortunately he
failed and was hanged, before his death he made a famous speech. Next were the Young Irelanders, they didn’t make it either and many were sent to Tasmania and Australia for hard labour in the very sunny weather. They ended up being very successful and became the generals of armies, ministers and were given a title. The IRB or the Fenians fought for freedom. Their rebellion was very bloody. After that Ireland tried to get their independence in a political way. The Home Rule League was an organisation that tried to get the parliament back to Dublin. This attempt was made by Isaac Butt. Next, was the Land League which was set up by Michael Davitt, they tried to get the land back for the Irish farmers and unlike others, they were successful.

The American Revolution

At the very beginning there were 13 British colonies in North America. The people living there had to pay tax to the British King for nearly everything, even tea. Once a group of settlers dressed as Native Americans and threw all the tea into the water in the Boston Harbour. That was the first signal to rebel against the British. They made up their own army. A man who came from Virginia (one of the colonies) called George Washington was brilliant at making war strategies. He was made Chief Commander of the US Forces. The French helped the Americans in the war. After a surprise attack on the Delaware River the British were pushed to Yorktown were they finally surrendered. Independence was won by the Americans!! George Washington became the first president of the USA. Now Independence Day is celebrated in the USA on the 4th of July The British left the USA but there are states still called the name that the British named them, for example, Virginia and Maryland.
