On Wednesday 18 January 2012, we went on a Local History Walk.
To start our history trail, we turned right at the school gates and walked down past St. Colmcille’s Church on Chapel Lane. We turned left at the T-junction with Main Street and crossed the road. There, over the shop ‘Blacktie’ was a plaque commemorating Richard Coleman for his part in the 1916 Rising and for being Captain of the Fingal Battalion. This was where Coleman lived. After our teacher, Ms Clarke, had told us some information about it, we moved onto Bridge Street. On one of the pillars of the bridge, there was a plaque remembering Peter Wilson who died in the Battle of Ashbourne during Easter week, 1916. We then walked to what was formally known as the ‘New Borough School’ in Seatown where the Fingal Battalion used to rendezvous for drill practice. Captain Richard Coleman also went to school there. Earlier in the week, we studied the plaque located in our school, which is dedicated to the memory of Richard Coleman and other volunteers of 1916. It was unveiled in 1968 on the 50th anniversary of Captain Richard Coleman’s death and was briefly visited by President Eamon De Valera.
