Fishing Courses 2003

South Western Regional Fisheries Board. Weekend & Five-Day Fly Fishing Courses.

As part of our service to inland fisheries we are running weekend and five-day fly-fishing courses in conjunction with Parknasilla Hotel in South Kerry.

Your course coordinator will be Fishery Manager James Pembroke and it will be his aim to give the guests an angling experience of a lifetime. We will have instructors from the top fly-casting instruction organization in the country, A.P.G.A.I.-Ireland (Association of Professional Game Anglers Instruction)

Well known author of the 'Rivers of Ireland' 'The Loughs of Ireland' and many more books, Mr Peter O'Reilly Central Fisheries Board, will attend as well as James Pembroke SWRFB, and a host of other qualified instructors and guides will be in attendance.

The course will consist of a chat in the morning at 9.30am on the principles of fly-casting and other related matters and will then proceed to the River for practical fly-casting instruction until lunch. Lunch will be a leisurely affair taken on the riverbank or in the hotel depending on weather conditions at the time.

Following lunch, guests will have a choice to either go fishing for Atlantic salmon and Sea Trout on the Kerry Blackwater Fishery with a professional guide (ghillie) or take up the casting instruction that will continue until 5.30pm.

During your stay you will have the opportunity to fish for wild brown trout from a boat in the traditional fishing style of an Irish Lough, and also have the opportunity to experience some of the work carried out on a day-to-day basis by the fisheries staff on a Kerry river. You will experience the trill of watching Atlantic salmon running the weir on the river and counting the salmon that have run through during the hours of darkness. You will also see some rare footage of running salmon and sea trout from an overhead and underwater cameras to verify the numbers on the electronic counter.

You will also have the opportunity to try out some beautiful fly rods by the well-known rod builders Bruce & Walker. Anglers wishing to buy any of the range of Bruce & Walker products can be accommodated.

The cost of the weekend course will be €405 per person and the cost of the five-day course will be €675 per person not including accommodation.
