Dinner Dance
The
Taghmon/Camross GAA club annual dinner dance at the Ferrycarrig hotel on Saturday
night was attended by a good crowd of 340.
Several special guests were in attendance including Offaly hurler Brian
Whelehan, Waterford footballer Martina O’Ryan, county board chairman Paddy
Wickham, and Bord na nÓg chairman and secretary Dermot Howlin and Margaret
Doyle. The presentations after the meal
were kicked off by club Bord na nÓg chairman John Waters. He thanked McGee Builders and Allen
Technology for sponsoring jerseys last year.
He also congratulated juvenile hurling goalkeeper, Edward Cousins for
his badminton success. Edward was unable
to attend because he was winning the Ulster Junior Open. He will represent Ireland in Japan later
this year. John introduced county board
chairman Dermot Howlin who congratulated the people of the parish for the great support they gave the
juvenile hurlers at the county final in Blackwater. He also thanked the Taghmon club for providing so many volunteers
to the county at both underage and adult level to help administer matches.
County Ladies Football chairman Nicky
White congratulated the lady footballers on their success winning the county
junior title last year. Martina O’Ryan
presented the team with their medals.
Barry McGrath, Brendan Doyle and Clodagh McGrath, the manager and team
selectors were presented with awards by the club for the team success. Brain Whelehan presented the U-21
footballers and junior B footballers with district medals and the juvenile
hurlers with county and district medals.
An award was made to Liam Morrissey and John Coady for coaching the team
to county success. Awards were made to
minor footballer, Jonathon Waters, for winning an All-Ireland medal in the
Vocational schools Competition, and to Derek Kent, Tom O’Gorman and John Waters
for coaching the Under 10’s so successfully.
Paddy Wickham wished the club every
success with its development and congratulated the club for its success during
the year. Secretary, Aindreas Ryan
presented the player of the year awards which were - Ladies Football - U-16
Laura Colfer, U-18 Marion Foley, Junior Bridgid Roche; Juvenile Hurler Darren
Colfer, Juvenile footballer Eoin Leacy, minor hurler John Kavanagh, minor
footballer Jonathan Waters, U-21 hurler David Banville, U-21 footballer Jason
McLoughlin, junior hurler Denis Nolan, intermediate hurler John O’Gorman, senior
footballer Trevor McLoughlin, and junior footballer, Pat O’Callaghan. Pat O’Callaghan made an acceptance speech on
behalf of the players. He compared
participation in the junior B campaign this year with owning a middling race
horse - a good way to see the country.
He described the travels to Laois, Wicklow and Dublin for practice
matches. He described the lack of
sanitary facilities in Lackan near Blessington and compared this with the sumptuous
dressing-room of the Kilmacud Crokes which even had radiators on which he could
dry his socks. This was the speech of
the night and warmed up the crowd for Brian Whelehan. He congratulated the club for its success and inclusion of ladies
and admired the table of trophies. Presentations
were then made to club members Tom Carty and Ulick Stafford who were married
during the year. Father Brennan said a
few words. He remarked that Pat O’Callaghan’s
comments brought back memories of Lackan where he used to hunt deer, and said
if Pat was up around the snow line the absence of sanitary facilities would not
up have been a problem.
Denis Nolan, the club chairman,
thanked all who are helping with the club development, especially those who
have not been regular members. Father
Murphy reminded club members that before he came to Taghmon parish, St Mary’s
of Rosslare defeated the U-21 footballers in the county final and after his
arrival the juvenile hurlers won. This
was received with good spirit.
After all the speeches the band
Buckshot kept the crowd dancing well into the night. A good night was had by all.
