Taghmon/Camross
Weekly Press Release, June 2, 1999
Hurling
It was a busy week for both junior and intermediates. The junior team defeated Ballyhogue in Bree by 2-14 to 2-9 on Tuesday evening last. This was a cracking game played with intensity especially in the second half. Taghmon/Camross had the better of the first half and were cruising by 1-9 to 1-3, but 5 unanswered points by Ballyhogue at the start of the second half made a real match of it. This woke up Taghmon and a switch of Derek Kent into full forward resulted in a good goal. The scorers for Taghmon/Camross were Eoin Leacy (0-7), Derek Kent (1-1), Nicky Cousins (0-3), Micheál O’Grady (1-0), Ger Kelly, Joe Doyle and Mick O’Gorman (0-1).
Unfortunately, the juniors
lost to Raparees by 0-10 to 1-5 in Bellefield on Sunday evening. This was the final match of the league and
victory would have secured a play-off spot.
Now it is a long wait until the junior B championship. The backs played very well with strong
performances by all especially goalkeeper Eddie Cousins, Paudge Codd and David
Morrissey. But the forwards wasted many
chances. The scores came from Nicky
Cousins (1-3) and Eoin Leacy (0-2). Two
refereeing decisions that went against Taghmon/Camross sparked some debate and
perhaps someone with a good knowledge of the rules can shed some light. In one instance Derek Kent hand-passed the
ball over the bar, but a point was not given.
In another instance the Raparees goalkeeper saved a certain goal by
throwing his hurley at the ball. Some thought
this should have resulted in a free.
The first team had a
comfortable win by 2-13 to 1-5 over HWH Bunclody in Taghmon on Saturday. Now that most first choice players are
available results have been improving.
The scorers for Taghmon/Camross were Robbie O’Callaghan (0-9), Gearóid
Kelly (2-0), Nicky Cousins (0-3), and Eoin Leacy (0-1). For HWH Bunclody Thomas Connors (1-0), John
Hassett, Francis Reck (0-2), and Seamie Kelly (0-1). The one remaining fixture is a week from next Tuesday at the
Shelmaliers.
