Taghmon/Camross
retain intermediate status
Taghmon/Camross intermediate hurlers retained Intermediate status with a gritty performance to defeat Gusserane in the first round relegation playoff in windy Grantstown on Saturday. Two goals in the last 3 minutes by man of the match, Robbie O'Callaghan reversed a goal deficit to leave a scoreline of 2-9 to 1-9. Gusserane had the advantage of a gale in the first half and led by 1-6 to 0-0 at halftime. For Taghmon this was a good performance to hold the lead to 9 points against the wind. The highlight for Taghmon in this half was Eugene McGee's superb save of a strongly hit ball that looked destined to go under the bar. Taghmon/Camross started the second half brightly and well taken points from Robbie O'Callaghan, Eoin Leacy and Bernard O'Gorman, and a monster 120 yard free struck by full-back, Tom O'Gorman reduced the deficit to 2 points. But Gusserane came back with a number of scores and with 3 minutes left, Taghmon were a goal down and were awarded a 21 yard free. Gusserane lined the goal, but Robbie O'Callaghan struck the ball low and hard and it went to the net after taking a deflection. A draw looked like the likely result, but a long hard shot driven by Robbie O'Callaghan from halfway was well shielded by Tom O'Gorman, now playing at full forward, and went to the back of the net. The whistle was blown shortly afterwards. Best for Taghmon/Camross were Eugene McGee in goal, Tom O'Gorman (0-1), Jimmy Doran, and Derek Breen in the backs, Nicky Cousins and Martin Hogan in the middle, and Robbie O'Callaghan (2-6), Eoin Leacy (0-1), and Bernard O'Gorman (0-1) up front. The club congratulates Bannow/Ballymitty for the superb condition of the pitch despite the heavy rain the night before and wishes Gusserane the best of luck in the next round.
