Taghmon/Camross GAA Club Notes, 24 April 2000
Football
The U-21 Footballers qualified for the New Ross district final with a narrow 2-7 to 0-12 win over Horeswood on Saturday in Fethard. Taghmon had the advantage of the wind in the first half but failed to fully capitalise of all scoring opportunities and led by 1 point, 1-4 to 0-6, at half time. The highlight of the half was when the ever-dangerous Diarmuid Buttimer fed Paul Doyle a lovely pass in front of goal which Paul finished well to the keeper’s right. The second half was dominated for long stretches by Horeswood whose greater strength up the middle caused difficulties. However, they failed to reap the full benefit and Taghmon with scores from Adrian Morrissey and Diarmuid Buttimer were never more than a point adrift. The match-winning move was a beautiful solo-run from midfield by Jason Delaney finished with a goal that went in off the post. After this Taghmon led by 2 points. Horeswood narrowed the gap to the minimum but stout defending by Taghmon during the final 5 minutes and 4 minutes of injury time ensured qualification for the final against Bannow-Ballymitty. The scorers were Adrian Morrissey(0-3), Paul Doyle (1-0), Jason Delaney (1-0), Diarmuid Buttimer (0-2), Shane Purcell (0-1), Malcolm McLoughlan (0-1). The intermediate footballers played Kilanerin away in Premier A on Wednesday and lost to the County Senior Football Champions by 2-14 to 2-8. The scorers for Taghmon-Camross were Malcolm McLoughlan (1-1), Jason McLoughlan (0-3), Micheál O’Grady (1-0), Gearóid Kelly (0-2), Derek Kent (0-2). The team plays at Gorey this Sunday and is seeking revenge for the relegation final defeat.
