Taghmon/Camross GAA Club Notes, 7 August 2000

Football Championship

Taghmon/Camross footballers completed the first step back towards senior football with a gutsy extra time win over gallant St. Fintan’s in the replayed intermediate championship match in Grantstown on Sunday afternoon by 3-15 to 3-13.  The team overcame the omission of several key players due to injury to put in a superb team effort full of commitment.  No fewer than nine players registered on the scoresheet.  St Fintan’s started better and were aided by what little wind there was to lead 1-6 to 1-3 at half time.  They continued to press and led by 5 points when Eamonn Codd was introduced into midfield 10 minutes into the second half.  The effect was immediate and with the help of Eamonn’s high fielding, good distribution and point scoring, the deficit was reversed and Taghmon had a small lead.  The highlight was a goal by minor star Jason Delaney who drilled a shot into the roof of the net after receiving a lovely through pass from Eamon Codd.  Eamon himself was judged man of the match and finished the match with 3 points 2 of which he scored kicking the ball back over his head with back to goal.  However, St. Fintan’s fought back to tie it up and could well have won with a free in injury time that went wide.  At full time the score was 2-9 to 1-12.  Taghmon started better in the extra time and went up by 2 points but St. Fintan’s struck back with a goal to lead.  But at the end of the half Jason McLaughlan, who had been put through with only the goalie to beat, was tripped professionally.  Goalkeeper, Eugene McGee came up to take the penalty and drove it to the back of the net giving Taghmon a 3-11 to 2-12 lead at half time of extra time.  Throughout the second half of extra-time both teams pressed well.  St. Fintan’s scored another goal but good scores from Malcolm McLoughlan and frees from Adrian Morrissey kept Taghmon in front.  The scorers were Jason McLoughlan (0-4, 3 frees), Micheál O’Grady (1-1, retired with black eye), Eamonn Codd (0-3), Adrian Morrissey (0-3, frees), Eugene McGee (1-0, penalty), Jason Delaney (1-0), Malcolm McLoughlan (0-2), Michael O’Sullivan (0-1), Jimmy Doran (0-1).  This was the first championship win for Taghmon/Camross’ first football team since beating St. Martin’s in 1996 in Wexford Park.  The team goes on to play Ballyhogue in the next round on Saturday August 19 at 5:30 in Bellefield.  There were plenty of celebrations afterwards.  The highlight was a jig on a table in the community centre by former Taghmon/Camross star, Jim McGee.
