Football
Both Taghmon/Camross teams were
understrength with several players unavailable and others having to play two
matches. Both teams suffered defeats in
ACFL league fixtures in Taghmon on Saturday evening. The intermediate team lost to Castletown by 3-11 to 3-4 in
Premier A. One bright point was the
welcome return of Paddy Fitzpatrick to competitive action. He accounted for most Taghmon scores with
(3-1). The other points were scored by
Jason McLoughlan, Gearóid Kelly and Joe Doyle.
Castletown scorers were Murt Hemplestall (1-5), Kevin Morris (1-2),
Cahill Ryan (1-0), James Holmes, Colin Sunderland, Damien Scallan and Des Carty
(0-1 each).
The junior team suffered their first
defeat by 1-9 to 0-9 to Oylegate-Glenbrien.
Malcolm McLoughlan and Eugene McGee were unfortunate and scored points
instead of goals from two penalties.
Joe Doyle was in good form and accounted for 5 points. The other points were scored by Eugene McGee,
Nicky Cousins, Malcolm McLouglan, and Ger Kelly. Scorers for Oylegate were M.J. Reck (1-3), Thomas Doyle (0-2),
Thomas Walshe (0-2), Patrick O’Brien and Eoin Parker (0-1).
Hurling
The intermediate hurling team fared
no better in Taghmon last Tuesday evening and suffered their first defeat in
the League by 3-10 to 3-9 to Blackwater B.
Taghmon/Camross had the better of a low scoring first half and led comfortably
by 2-3 to 0-2 at half time on a perfect warm summers evening for hurling with
no wind. Gearóid Kelly scored two
lovely goals. However, a couple of
premature substitutions early in the second half weakened the full back line
and Blackwater began to dominate midfield later in the game. They took the lead with a penalty and increased
the lead to 4 points going into the last few minutes. Nicky Cousins scored a goal from a 30 yard free to reduce the
lead to the minimum. However, time ran
out before the deficit could be eliminated.
Scorers were Gearóid Kelly (2-2), Nicky Cousins (1-4), Jimmy Doran,
Martin Hogan and Diarmuid Buttimer (0-1).
For Blackwater Seán Whelan (2-6), Denis Kelly (1-0), Eoin Ryan (0-2),
Paul Murphy and Val Whelan (0-1).
