Taghmon/Camross GAA Club Notes, 9 October 2000
Hurling Heartbreak
The juniors played Clongeen in Kilmore in the final of Division 2D on Saturday afternoon. The final score was either 0-9 to 1-4 in favour of Clongeen or 2-4 to 0-9 in favour of Taghmon depending on the outcome of the appeal. The final puck of the game was a 65 taken by Nicky Cousins which he dispatched perfectly to the roof of the net, despite the fact that nearly every Clongeen player was inside the small parallelogram. One umpire called it a good goal, but the other called a square ball. The referee deferred to this inexperienced umpire and disallowed the goal. Clongeen were awarded the match despite the fact that the free for the 'square ball' was not taken and the final whistle was not blown. The club is appealing the decision.
The match before was not a spectacle. Clongeen had the advantage of a strong wind in the first half and built a commanding 0-7 to 0-1 lead. Taghmon were reduced to 14 men after 20 minutes when Niall Lacey was adjudged to have struck a Clongeen player with his hurley. He himself was struck in the face with the butt of a hurley but this offence was not penalised. David Morrissey filled in at corner back and swept all before him. In the second half Taghmon/Camross with only 14 men could not capitalise on the wind advantage. The best of the forwards David Morrissey and Nicky Cousins were moved back the pitch and Clongeen used the extra man to good effect. Tom O'Gorman was the only forward to score from play. However, Eoin Lacey scored two long frees and coming into the last 5 minutes Camross trailed by 5. A 21-yard free was awarded and Nicky Cousins struck this to the net reducing the arrears to 2 points. Taghmon continued to press for the winning goal and were awarded the 65. The scorers were Nicky Cousins (2-1, frees), Eoin Lacey (0-2, frees), Tom O'Gorman (0-1).
