Taghmon/Camross GAA Club Notes, 19 February, 2001
Dinner Dance
The club dinner dance was held in the Ferrycarrig Hotel on Saturday. It was attended by a crowd of over 260. The Minor footballers and U-16 Lady footballers and camogie players, who won county titles last year were honoured at the event. After the fine meal chairman Denis Nolan kicked off proceeding by inviting clubman and Bord na nÓg chairman, Michael Stafford to say a few words. Michael welcomed county board chairman Seamus Howlin and his wife Vera and Leinster council representative Pat Doyle. He praised the efforts of the U-12 footballers who lost the county final last year and asked the adult players to stop going backwards and use the good facilities to win adult titles for the club. Bord na nÓg chairman, Derek Kent presented the minor footballers with their medals and presented awards for players of the year to Jason Delaney for hurling and Adrian Morrissey for football. Captain Jason Delaney then presented selectors Laim Morrissey, Michael O’Gorman and John Coady with awards for their efforts on behalf of the players. The U-21 player of the year awards were made to Jimmy Doran for football and Jonathon Waters for hurling. Last years adult players of the year, Tom O’Gorman (football) and Noel Doyle (hurling) were presented with replicas of the perpetual trophies. Paddy Green took over for the ladies football presentation. The U-16 win was the only title not won last year by the Shelmaliers, so it was ironic that Shelmalier, Laura Corrigan, was the guest of honour to present the medals to the girls for football and camogie. After this presentation Seamus Howlin spoke. He emphasised the role of schools in player development. He promised Wexford Park would open in June. He complimented the development at the club. He praised the girls for their achievement and pointed out that they were the mothers of tomorrow (most club members hope it is a bit further into the future!). He complimented Michael Stafford and newly appointed Disciplinary chairman, Noel O’Gorman, and praised the support of Derek Kent’s business to GAA in the county. After this speech presentation of medals were made for the club’s adult hurling successes in ACHL Division 2B and the 1999 Fox Cup. Players of the year awards were presented for Ladies Football to Ornagh Foley (U-16), Ann-Marie Banville (U-18), Avril Nolan (Junior), and joint awards for U-16 Camogie to Aine Breen and Aisling Macnamara. Adult awards were presented to John Kavanagh for Junior B football, Nicholas Cousins for Junior B hurling, Michael O’Sullivan for intermediate football and Bernard O’Gorman for Intermediate hurling. Clubman of the year was presented to outgoing treasurer, Eoin O’Gorman. Liam Morrisey spoke personally thanked the minor footballers for honouring him and fellow selectors. On behalf of the Camogie club, he praised the efforts of the girls who after only 3 years were competing very well reaching semifinals at U-12 and U-14 as well as the U-16 success. He especially thanked Mary and Denis Nolan for their coaching efforts. Laura Corrigan was presented with an award by the club and thanked the club for inviting her and encouraged the club for more success. After the speeches Fr Murphy said grace and everyone danced the night away to music by Buckshot.
