Married vs. Singles
The annual married vs. singles football match (18 a side) was played on St Stephen’s Day and the married players reversed the trend of recent years and emerged victorious by a score of 1-8 to 0-6. Despite playing against the breeze the married scored the first 5 points, and despite a half end rally by the singles led at half time by 0-5 to 0-3. In the second half the married added to the lead and man of the match Jim McGee scored a well-taken goal. If attempts at majors by Liam Morrissey, Ulick Stafford and Micheál O’Grady had not been denied by David Banville the game would have been quite one sided. At the other end Liam Gaynor was superb in goal and denied a certain goal attempt from Darren Colfer. Niall Lacey cleared another from the line. The married effort was helped by parish residents and former players who are not currently on the club books including the ever brilliant John O’Gorman (0-2, Dicksboro), Jim McGee (1-3, Volunteers), Liam Gaynor (St Anne’s), David Foley (Offaly), and Niall McDonald (Crossabeg-Ballymurn). The other married scorers were Derek Kent, Mick Carty and Micheál Hayes (0-1 each). For the singles Joe Doyle (0-2), Brian O’Gorman, Michael Nolan, Darren Colfer and Adrian Morrissey (0-1) each.
A married vs. singles hurling match was played on New Years Day. The result was a draw, 1-5 each. Man of the match was Wicklowman, David Bury, who is a fine addition to the club for the coming season. The club thanks James Flood for refereeing.
