Taghmon/Camross GAA Club Notes, 15 January, 2001

Boxing

In the GAA closed season interest can switch to other sports and there was no better entertainment than St Ibar’s Boxing Tournament in the Talbot Hotel on Saturday night.  Club member, midfielder, John Roche made his debut in the ring in a heavyweight boxing match against Joe Price from Bray.  “The Horse” started well showing no signs of nerves in his first fight and scored well in the first round with a good combination of blows that resulted in a cut to his opponents face.  He made good use of his greater reach against his stockier opponent and was seldom troubled.  His opponent was forced to take two standing eight counts during the fight which was stopped in the third round.  This TKO was the only fight not to go the distance on the night.  There was great support from Taghmon for John and this support can follow John to Bray for a fight against another opponent on Saturday night.  A bus has been arranged and anyone wishing the follow “The Horse” should contact club secretary Bridie Doyle at (053) 34512 for more information.
