Taghmon/Camross GAA Club Notes, 18 June 2001

Hurling

Taghmon-Camross junior B hurlers remain on course for a promotion place in Division 2C with a convincing win away to Fethard B on Tuesday evening last by 4-13 to 4-10 (HT 3-8 to 2-3). The match was never as close as the scoreline suggests with 1-1 of Fethard’s total coming in the last few minutes. Eoin Lacey marked a comeback from an extended injury absence at full-forward scoring 1-3. Veteran Tom O’Gorman was in good form scoring several frees from half way for a total of (1-5). The other scores were from Nicky Cousins (1 penalty -1), Brian O’Gorman (1-0), Shane Coady (0-2), Mick O’Gorman, Derek Kent (0-1).

The first team played Leinster Junior champions Askamore in a challenge match on Friday to kick off the official opening celebrations are were narrowly beaten by 1-14 to 2-9 (HT 1-8 to 2-3). Camross got the best possible start scoring 2 early goals and only trailed by 2 points at half time. They started brilliantly in the second half scoring 2 points to level it and were level with Askamore until the last few minutes. It was a good warm up performance for the next round especially as a number of first choice players were unavailable. The scorers were Robbie O’Callaghan (1-3), Mick O’Gorman (1-0), Bernard O’Gorman (0-3), Gearoid Kelly, Martin Coady, Eoin Lacey (0-1 each).

Football

Four adult matches were played in Taghmon on Sunday the last two of which were ACFL encounters. In the Premier B encounter Taghmon got the same number of scores as Duffry Rovers, but unfortunately fewer were majors in the 4-5 to 1-8 defeat (HT 2-4 to 0-7). Relegation is now likely. Duffry got a dream start scoring a goal within 30 second playing against the wind and scored another when Taghmon had fought back and led by one goal at half time. Taghmon started the second half well and Michael O’Sullivan scored a goal to equalise. However, Duffry came down nearly immediately and scored two quick majors and a minor. The scorers were Jason McLoughlan (0-4, frees), Michael O’Sullivan (1-0), Dermot Breen, Jonathon Waters, Micheál O’Grady, Derek Breen (1-0 each).

The juniors fared better and beat Clongeen convincingly by 2-12 to 3-3 (HT 1-8 to 1-1). Unfortunately the game was marred by a serious leg injury to one of the Clongeen players. We wish him a speedy recovery. Clongeen got a goal to start and it was a long time before Taghmon registered, but when the scores came they were thick and fast. The star was sixteen year old Lloyd Colfer who made his adult debut scoring 1-5 before he was substituted early in the second half. The other scorers were Ger Power (1-4), Joe Doyle (0-2), George Dee (0-1). The team remains on course for the final and promotion from Division 2B.

Official Opening

Taghmon-Camross GAA Community Centre New Pitch and Extension was officially opened on Sunday by Hugh Byrne TD, Minister of State in the Department of Marine and Natural Resources and by Seamus Howlin, Chairman of GAA Wexford County Board. In the feature event Leinster finalist Wexford defeated the George O’Connor All-star selection by 3-22 to 1-12. The All-stars were put together at the last moment after the scheduled opponents withdrew. The club sincerely thanks all those who took part for the All-stars and the Wexford team for honouring our opening by playing. This was followed by a minor hurling challenge match between Wexford and Cork. This was a splendid match won 2-17 to 2-11 by Wexford. The club’s own Darren Colfer played at corner back on the Wexford team. This was followed by two ACFL matches. The club thanks all who worked and attended on the day, especially the teams. A souvenir booklet was specially produced and a few copies are still available at £2 each.
