Taghmon/Camross GAA Club Notes, 14 May 2001
Hurling
Taghmon/Camross first team won its first championship match in 6 years defeating Rapparees by 1-5 to 0-6 in Cushinstown on Saturday evening in the first round of the Junior A championship. It was a dour low scoring affair and Taghmon-Camross despite having the better of the play were only on level terms 0-2 to 0-2 at halftime. A good start to the second half produced a 3 point lead before the Enniscorthy club got things back level by economical scoring from frees. Robbie O’Callaghan scored the winning goal with a few minutes remaining and Rapparees could only produce a point in response. The victory was satisfactory because 5 first choice players were unavailable mostly through injury. The forward line was particularly affected. The veteran last line of defense of Eugene McGee, Noel Doyle, Tom O’Gorman and Pat O’Callaghan and the youthful half back line of Mike O’Gorman, Jonathon Waters and Derek Breen allowed very little. Martin Hogan and Robbie O’Callaghan (1-1) battled hard in midfield. Martin Coady (0-1), Dave Bury (0-3) and substitute, David Morrissey, were the best of the forwards.
The Junior B campaign got off to a bad start at the same venue on Sunday evening with a loss by 3-3 to 1-2 to Gusserane. Taghmon-Camross led at halftime 1-2 to 0-1 but failed to score in the second half. Joe Doyle (1-1, penalty, free) and Mick O’Gorman (0-1) got the scores. Wins against Horeswood and Adamstown are essential if progress is to be made.
