The
Role of the Primary Teachers' Network
The
role of the primary teacher continues to change and develop in response to
societal, legislative and educational change.
The pace of this unprecedented change and development gathers, thereby
creating a need for a new level of awareness among teachers, in order that we
can, not only manage this change, but influence new policy and practice.
Teachers
are becoming more conscious that important decisions are being made on their
behalf, decisions which will profoundly affect their professional standing and
which will radically change the system as we know it.
The
opportunity to be involved at every level of change can only be achieved through
networking, through creating a vehicle through which the knowledge and expertise
and considered judgements of the professionals can be aired and brought to bear
on those who make these decisions.
Although
the INTO, through the efforts of the Education Standing Committee, Equality
Committee etc. do a lot of work, it is representative rather than broadbased.
To
this end, it is envisaged that through the establishment of Primary Teachers’
Network, teachers will have an opportunity to communicate more easily, thus
facilitating the exchange of ideas, the dissemination of information and the
sharing of professional expertise.
As
a corollary, groups will be established which will, it is hoped, eventually
actively inform and influence those who make policy decisions concerning Primary
Education.
