We have yet to go to Dooey to take a photo which we can display here. In the meantime, we are showing a painting by Chris who wrote the piece below!
Fortunately enough, the people of Lettermacaward have one of the nicest beaches in Éire, practically at their doorstep. The sand is soft and clean. In the Summer, hundreds of people go to Dooey beach during their holidays. Some people even camp out along the dunes and banks for a few nights. You can also walk from Dooey strand to Corr strand, though it is a very long walk, at about 2 miles. My Dad and I went on that same walk. At one point of the beach, you can see Narin strand. There were about 50 seals there, some sleeping, sun-bathing and swimming. I was hoping that one would come over to me, but unfortunately they didn't. About 4 or 5 years ago a dead baby whale was washed ashore. It started to rot quickly so the people of Dooey notified the County Council and they buried it in the sand. Quite recently a weather balloon also washed ashore. It was used to send signals back to the weather station it came from about the weather around the area it was in. The first citizen of Lettermacaward to see it was my next door neighbour, Martin Mc Shane. As it was unusual, he took it home with him. He put it in the lake beside him, and put an Irish flag on top of it. Over 50 years ago, (During World War 2), a boat foundered nearby and was washed ashore by the tide. It was in very good condition. On board there were lots of sweets and cakes. There were also guns on board, probably for the sailors to use if they were being attacked. Many people from Leitir went down to it, including my Granny. They took the sweets and some people took parts of the boat. It was left there after that. To this very day you can still see the very top of it as the rest has been covered by sand through the years.
