As the old iron bridge became weaker with age, it was necessary for bus passengers to disembark on one side before letting the bus continue to the far side where the passengers would board again to continue their journey. If nothing else, it afforded people a chance to stretch their legs. The rare photo above (compliments of Brian Cannon) shows this very fact with three passengers making their way across to the waiting bus.
