Artists’ Recordings and Interviews Where to buy kora music on CD or cassette

When you get onto the sites below just type in “kora” into the search box of the sites and follow on from there (make sure that you click on “styles” or “genres” first if the option is given). You may go directly to my section of specific artists on this page.

You can find some good info, but it can be a bit tricky to navigate in the site with loads of links, most of which work as useless back-tracking.

Here I’ve given a direct link to the kora section. There is some good info but there is a lot of sections which are not filled in yet. If you wish to buy a CD it will direct you to www.amazon.com if the said album is available.

This site is in French and has a nice selection of CDs which will be hard to find elsewhere.

A good selection with audio clips.

Boasts low prices but doesn’t have a large selection.

Not a large selection but it has audio clips.

If you open an account here you can hear some kora music.

This also reviews the CDs it sells.

Hasn’t got a large selection.

More places to buy kora music on CD but you have to know exactly what you’re looking for (i.e. the specific artists / albums / regions, etc.). I have given direct links to the kora section in some cases:

It offers good sound samples of the CDs.

There are useful links to other artists here and to other sites. It is a good source of info on some of the best kora players. This site shares facilities with allmusic.com, which is listed above.

Has a good selection with audio samples.

Offers some recordings but doesn’t have them laid out in an easy-to-use fashion. Its catalogue is laid out in order of country - so remember that the kora is mostly found in Gambia, Mali, and Senegal.
Articals and interviews:

CDnow has an interview with Simon Emerson of the AfroCelt Sound System.

An online magazine, could find something on kora musicians here (I did).

Toumani Diabate is featured.

and so is the group Jali Kunda.

Promo page with good info and pictures.

Interview with Philip Glass and a kora player.
