Ó CINNÉIDE (KENNEDY)

Kennedy family tree (common to all lines) (this is still being researched)

Kennedy is a good Irish name - its correct Irish form is “Ó Cinnéide”, and unfortunately its meaning is not very flattering (ugly-headed, rough-headed). In Old Irish it was a personal name “Cennétig”. In the early period this name was found mainly in the Munster region of Ireland. It was borne, among others, by “Cennétig mac Gaíthíne”, king of “Laígis” and famous battler against the Vikings, and by “Cennétig mac Lorcáin”, king of Dál Cais and father of Brian Boru, victor at the battle of Clontarf (1014) which was the first defeat for the Vikings. This is where the modern surname “Ó Cinnéide” (O Kennedy) comes from.
The Ó Cinnéide Sept was based in County Clare, but branches of the Sept migrated to Counties Tipperary and Antrim so the name is today widespread throughout the country and in fact is among the twenty most frequently found.
