Ó FUARTHÁIN (FORDE)

Forde family tree (common to my siblings)

The name Ford(e) as used in Ireland has many sources and was widely used as a synonym of several Irish surnames. Forde itself is a well-known English name and was brought to Ireland by English settlers, especially during the seventeenth century. However, a number of Irish Septs adopted or were given Forde as the anglicised form of their name such as, MacKinnawe, MacElnay, Foran, Forhane.

I have selected O Forhane for my Forde family as “Ó Fuartháin”, the Irish form, is an old name used in Kerry and west Cork which is the area the family has its roots. The coat of arms above are not usual for Forde but I could not select the usual as it is the coat of arms for MacKinnawe, a Connacht Sept.
