Will the real journalist please stand up? According to the movies it should be easy to recognize a journalist: He is the annoying littleman always interfering in other peoples' business with a pencil behind his ear and a notebook in his hand. To be really sure, check if he (or she?!!!) is smoking and drinking all the time. It must be a disappointment for believers of this stereotype to go into a real-life newsroom. They probably wouldn't recognize a real-life journalist. What has happened to the original presshound from earlier days? Is it a dying species or is it possible that one or two specimens remain alive? It is probably the media's own fault that the image of the smoking and drinking journalist has stayed alive for so many years; they've never tried to convince the public otherwise. Maybe the public needs a stereotype of the 'typical' journalist to fit into their understanding of the world. One thing is for sure, I have never met a journalist who, like any ordinary person, didn't like a glass of beer, wine or liquor now and then. It's still true your best shot of finding a journalist is by going to the nearest pub. To be honest, I couldn't think of a better place to interview a person or to discuss something with my colleagues. About the pencil, I think it would bother me being behind my ear anyway...
