| Origin | Ever since he can remember, Knuckles was the guardian of the Chaos Emeralds on the Floating Island. It is the Chaos Emerald's power that keeps the island afloat so Knuckles has a pretty important job on his hands. However, things go a bit awry when Robotnik crashes the Death Egg onto the Island and then convinces Knuckles that Sonic and Tails are after the Emeralds. | ||
| Official SA Storyline | Knuckles is looking after the Master Emerald when it shatters, waking up, Knuckles sees Chaos, who quickly disappears. Without the Emeralds power, the Island falls. Knuckles goes to look for the Emerald shards to reassemble the Emerald. He first finds some in Speed Highway, then in Casinopolis. He then is transported to the past to see Tikal and her father argue, but returns to the present and after seeing Robotnik and following him, Knuckles faces and fights Chaos 1 and defeates him. On leaving, Robotnik tells Knuckles that Sonic is after the shards too. Knuckle then heads to Mystic Ruins where he gets more shards in Red Mountain. On leaving, he sees Sonic with an Chaos Emerald and mistakes it for a Master Emerald shard. In fighting, Sonic drops the two Chaos Emeralds, Robotnik steals them, and Knuckles realises his mistake. Robotnik gives the Emeralds to Chaos who changes to Chaos 4. Knuckles fights and defeates him. After Robotnik escapes, and Sonic and Tails follows him, Knuckles finds more Emerald shards in Lost World, and is once again transported to the past where he sees Tikal asking the Master Emerald to take everyone away. He returns and after putting all the shards he has into the Master Emerald, he finds out the remaining ones are on the Egg Carrier. Following, E-102, Knuckles gets there and searching the Sky Deck, finds the shards he needs. He is then, once again transported to the past where he sees the Emerald Alter on fire. Tikal says she had no idea something like this could happen. Knuckles returns to present. He sees a flash at the bow of the ship and runs over there to see Sonic facing Robotnik. Robotnik leaves and Sonic follows. Knuckles sees Chaos 6 and they battle. On defeating Chaos 6, the emeralds are left on the ground. Knuckles glides back to his Island. He returns the final shards to the Master Emerald and the Island rises, once more, into the sky. He knows that he dosn't have all the answers but that probably it is better that way, once again, he is at peace. | ||

The Echidnas fought to defend their planet. Knuckles was one of the warriors and was their after the Echidnas won a large battle in the war. What happened next is a mystery but thousands of years later, Knuckles found himself on the Floating Island, knowing nothing else but the fact that it was his duty to protect the Chaos Emeralds. | |
| History | The myth of a Floating Island existed around Mobius. It originated from the times when clouds struck the Sun in a way that made it seem that there was something solid behind it. No one realised that these myths were true. After Sonic destroyed the Death Egg, it crashed into the Floating Island. Knuckles went to investigate and Robotnik convinced him that Sonic was after the Chaos Emeralds that kept the Island afloat. In STC 33 Sonic went to the Floating Island in search of Robotnik and ran into Knuckles, or more precicely, his fist. In the fights between Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic got Tails to capture Robotnik. However, using a tracking device, Knuckles rescued Robotnik from Sonic's secret base, and also got a hold of Sonic's Chaos Emeralds. Back at the Island, Robotnik and Knuckles joined the Chaos Emerlads on the Floating Island with Sonic's Chaos Emeralds. Robotnik then took the chance to absorb the Emerald Energy and become a God, but Knuckles never fully trusted him and used the Grey Emerald he had kept secret to remove his power and force Robotnik off the Island. Knuckles returned to Mobius to help Sonic fight off Robotniks attack on Sonic's "now not so" Secret base but when he went back to the Floating Island, he found a huge amusement park had been built on it by the "Marxio Brothers (from Marxio Land)" who worked for Robotnik. Dealing with them and destroying the park, Knuckles met up with Sonic on his way to destroy Robotnik's Death Egg, still on the Island. But using an new Metallix, Robotnik took the Master Emerald, and used it to make the Death Egg take off. After getting Sonic onto the Death Egg, Knuckles used the Island's power to attack the it. With this help, Sonic got the Emerald back to the Island, but would only return it if Knuckles gave refuge to the Emerald Hill inhabitents on the Island so they would be safe from Robotnik. Knuckles agreed. After this, Knuckles got transported to the Special Zone where he fought Chatoix until a misunderstanding was cleared, they then co-operated to fight the Brotherhood of Metallix who captured the Omni-Viewer. He then returned to be transported off to somewhere again, namely the Nameless Zone where for the first time, he went on an adventure with Tails, where Sonic wasn't in sight. On returning to the Island, Knuckles was soon caught up in a Saga where a member of his own race, Dr. Zachary, returned. But he turned out to be evil, and used an Ancient Robot to absorb the power of the Master Emerlald and then destroy it. Acting quickly while the Island started losing altitude, Knuckles damaged the Robot's flying ability and in leaving the Robot, Dr. Zachary fell off the Island. Knuckles was able to use the Robot's head to make the Island rise again, but this was only a temperory solution. Entering an ancient canyon, Knuckles had to deal with the spirits of ancient dinosaurs, but managed to make peace with them, and returned to the Emerald Chamber with a giant Emerald which he proceeded to cut into shape. However, when transferring the energy from the robot head to the Emerald, the head reactivated and launched energy beams destroying a lot of the ancient machinery around the Emeralds but as the energy left the Robot head, the evil programming Dr. Zachary had put into the robot got deleted. Knuckles realised that by using the ancient machinery the Floating Island always had, he could scan the Robot head's memory for evidence to where his people were but the machinery was now in desperate need for repair. Fortunately, in STC 73, Knuckles met Captain Plunder, a pirate who was currently raiding a ghost ship and had ancient documents about the Floating Island that Knuckles could use to repair the ancient hi-tech computers. Captain Plunder said he would give them too him if he helped him steal an mystical transportation device from the Ghost Ship though the actual documents were not in the ship, but back at his home. In the end, Knuckles ended up at Plunder's home on the surface of Mobius, but not having got the device, Plunder refused to give them to him but was then forced to by his mother. From STC82 all the way to STC98 Knuckles dragged his chest of ancient documents across Mobius, dealing with overgrown lobsters, hypnotisim and some corrupted cowboys, before getting a Pterodactyl to take him the rest of the way to the Floating Island, with only one quick stop to involve himself in the first story to have Mystic and Pyjamas, and another to (ahem) dig some tunnels to help out Sonic's friends. When he finally got to the Floating Island, Knuckles came face to face with a Dr. Zachary cyborg and Robotnik, who had captured all the Emerald Hill folk and attached them to a machine to use them as an organic battery, but with the fateful electro-magnetic pulse of STC100 that ended Robotniks dictatorship, the computer was shut down. Dr. Zachary fell into a crack, and soon after the Emerald Hill folk returned to Emerald Hill. After a small break, Knuckles returned in STC121 where he and Porker Lewis entered the Special Stage, but on returning, his story merged with the main story where Sonic and Tails had taken the Master Emerald from the chamber to protect it from the Drakon Empire led by Grimer. But the Empire they still got the Emerald only to be betrayed by Grimer who transported all the Empire's troops away before bringing Robotnik into the chamber. Once again, Robotnik absorbed all the power from the Chaos Emeralds and became a God, changing Mobius into what it would be like if Sonic never existed. Through and epic issue of STC, Sonic managed to use the Grey Emerald to take the power back from Robotnik and things changed back to normal. After another break, and a threat on the Chaos Emeralds Knuckles dealt with, Knuckles was with Sonic when a robot appeared in the Island. They both went to fight it, but Sonic left Knuckles realising the Robot was a diversion. Sonic went on to find Knuckles and Nack transport themselves to Shanazar and follow. Irritatingly end to the battle between Knuckles and the Robot was never shown. When Shanazar and Mobius merged numerous episodes later, Knuckles was seen back on the merged planet but barely did anything, he appeared again on the planet helping Mobians with Tails while Sonic and the rest were dealing with Robotnik who was causing the trouble. Lew Stringer, the writer for these stories, said that Knuckles was just someone who came to Mobius when help was needed and returned to the Island when things were done. Quite how Knuckles managed to travel between the Island and the planet and why he never left the Island before without a much better reason, is something of a mystery. Finally, getting properly involved in the comic, Knuckles played a large part in the last original story in the comic. Being on the Floating Island, Chaos attacked and tryed to take the Chaos Emeralds, being left with no choice, Knuckles ejected the Emeralds from the Island. Knuckles escaped as the Island plunged into the sea. When Sonic travelled back in time, he entered the ancient Echidana Civilisation who were battling the Drakon Empire. He also met Knuckles there as a member of the Echidna civilisation and concluded that somehow, Knuckles had been put in suspended animation and woke up thousands of years later with only the memory that he had to protect the Island's Chaos Emeralds. Knuckles was there at the final battle and even, like Tails, had a shot at attacking Super Sonic, but in the end, Super Sonic was dealt with, and, like all other STC characters, was never seen in an original STC story again. | ||
| Attitude | Knuckles is a tough character, easily agravated, he viciously defended the Island and refused to leave even when it was about to plunge into the sea. He originally disliked Sonic, letting him on the island only when it was absolutely necessary, and even then, only for as short a time as possible. But over time, he grew to tolerate Sonic and their differences started to ebb away. | ||
