Origin How Tails got his twin tails is never fully explained in the SegaSonic version. A theory to his lack of a proper origin might be explained by the fact that it is believed that Tails was originally conceived as the Guardian of the Chaos Emerald. This is supported by the Hidden Palace Zone, complete with Master Emerald, appearing in an early (Beta) version of Sonic 2. Even a Tails life up icon was found there. When this plan was for whatever reason abandoned, deadlines may have forced Sonic Team to compromise Tail's origin. Whatever the reason, Tails meeting Sonic is explained in the SegaSonic Universe, but in two different versions! The instruction manuel for Sonic 2 says ever since Tails was a baby fox, he dreamed of being like Sonic and followed him everywhere, but Sonic Adventure says that Tails just suddenly met Sonic in a forest and through facination and obsession, followed him.
Official Storyline For pre Dreamcast storylines, see the soon to be up, Sonic Universe section. But from the Dreamcast... Tails tests out a new prototype plane that runs on a Chaos Emerald but it crashes. He meets up with Sonic and they head for Tails' workshop in the Mystic Ruins. They bump into Dr. Robotnik who steals the Chaos Emerald and gives it to Chaos, a liquid monster who needs 7 Chaos Emeralds to become invincible. Sonic and Tails try to get the Emerlads before Robotnik does and suceed in getting 2 in Windy Valley and Casino Night but Robotnik steals one of them. Not put off so easily, they get another in Ice Cap but Knuckles, after being tricked, attacks them and Robotnik takes the Emeralds and gives them to Chaos. After fighting Chaos 4, Tails sees the Egg Carrier a massive ship which Robotnik escapes to. Tails and Sonic reach Tail's workshop and follow the Egg Carrier in Sonic's plane, the Tornado. They are shot down and seperated and Tails realises that he needs to use his prototype plane which is stronger. He needs a Chaos Emerald which Tails gets in Dust Hill but is then temperorily transported to the past where he meets a strange Echidna girl named Tikal who tells him a strange verse. He returns and after meeting Big the Cat breifly, he uses the Emerald to fly the plane and reach Sonic. Together, Tails flys the plane to the Egg Carrier and he and Sonic pass through the Sky Deck to find Amy. E-101 pops up and Tails fights him but is stopped by Amy who says the robot is her friend. Sonic chases Robotnik so Tails flys Amy to Station Square where they say goodbye. Suddenly, Robotnik comes out of nowhere and sends a missile to Station Square. It dosn't detonate, but Robotnik can make it explode. Tails races Robotnik to it and stops him from reaching it. Infuriated, Robotnik attacks him with the Egg Walker and defeating this, Tails flys to Mystic Ruins and meets Sonic. He later tells Sonic that the Floating Island has fallen and he and Tails race to find out what is wrong. They find out that Chaos attacked Knuckles and Eggman and has all 6 Chaos Emeralds. They race to where the Tornado 2 with the final Chaos Emerald is but are too late. Chaos gets the final Emerald and becomes Perfect. With his power, Perfect Chaos floods Station Square. Tails reaches Sonic after Sonic races there and tells him that if he uses the now discarded Emeralds using their positive energy, he can defeat Chaos. Sonic does this and becomes Super, he attacks Chaos and neutralises him. He and Tikal fly into the sky and disappear. Station Square can stand and new coat of paint but otherwise things are well again.
AoStH Origin Tails originally met Sonic when he was a baby by falling out of a birds nest saying that the birds wouldn't let him live with them. Sonic clears Tails up by telling that he is a fox but is quickly proved wrong by Tails when he says "....and foxes don't fly". After a couple of injuries Sonic hears Tails tell him his real name "Miles" saying that he hates the name so Sonic gives him his nikname, "Tails." From then on, Tails sticks with Sonic.
Attitude Tails is an optomistic, smart and young fox. He often ends up in trouble and has to be rescued by Sonic but there times when he does his best and shows how smart as he can be. He loves to tag along with Sonic and share the fun, and whatever happens, Sonic and Tails are always team.
SatAM Origin Tails' origins in SatAM are unclear. To my knowledge nothing seems to indicate how Tails entered the Freedom Fighters. He has, however, made some references to him missing his parents. Other then that........
History Confirmation of Tails' existance in early episodes can only be made by recording the intro sequence and playing a part of it in slow motion. Tails has a severe lack of coverage in this series and some episodes just have him appearing in cameos if at all. Tails rarely takes part in the bulk of the action as Sally takes Tails' place as Sonic's main companion though in a different way that Tails would have! Tails isn't even seen as a proper Freedom Fighter. As the series goes on, Tails participates more and more and even enters for enters some Freedom Fighter tests which he does well in. He gradually starts to take part in the some of the real action and gets his part of the spotlight, but for the most part, Antoine, Rotor, Bunnie and Sally are seen along with Sonic as the real freedom fighters.
Attitude Tails is shown as a young innocent 8 year old. He always wants to be part of the Freedom Fighters so he does the best he can to show he is worthy and takes on the tests with enthusiasim. As well as showing innocence, he is also caring, imaginative, active, enthusiastic, quick to catch on, clever and courageous. While he stays mainly in Knothole, he shows his mettle when given the chance.
Notes Strangely enough, Tails' shoes are the wrong colour (I'm European so the "u" stays in you Americans). Officially and normally, Tails' shoes are half white, half red. However in SatAM, the shoes' colour is the reverse of Sonic's shoes' colour. White with a red stripe.
Sonic Underground A complete no-show, no Tails, no anything to do with Tails in this series, that's all there is to it really. Now you can see why I wasn't worried about what to put down for this section.
Sonic Anime/The Movie Origin No info here
History Without explaining the film, I can't tell you anything.
Attitude Tails is optimistic, determined and intuitive. Accepted as an equal to Sonic he uses his gifted electronic, mechanical and pilot skills to help in any way. Going with Sonic everywhere, sharing danger and laughs, Tails and Sonic are truely a team.
Archie Sonic Comic Tails does appear here but yet again, no Archie Comics. Anyone care to help me out here?
Fleetway Sonic the Comic Origins Tails originally came from a zone known as the Nameless Zone. He was born with his two Tails and often got bullied for it. When trying to rescue one of these bullys when he was flown away by a creature for his master to put in a fighting arena, Tails accidentally fell off a cliff (let YOU never make the same mistake). While falling, he spinned his tails as dismay overwhelmed him and suddenly, he realised how to fly. He rescued the bully when the creature saw Tails and dropped the bully into a pond of mud. Tails left the Nameless Zone looking for more then his home town could provide. In an accident, he fell into a swamp. Sonic had just finished going supersonic for the first time and he just saw Tails just as Tails' two tails were still at the surface. Sonic pulled him out by a tail believing the other to belong to another fox. When Tails was clear of the marsh, he showed Sonic that both tails were his. He then showed him that he could fly and gave Sonic his real name before giving him his nikname which everyone called him by. From then on Sonic and Tails were officially a double act.
History Tails was right with STC from issue 1, well at least in spirit. His existance was aknowledged but he didn't actually make an appearance in the comic until issue 2. His he was played his role as Sonic's sidekick but on no.16, Tails took off on his first seperate adventure. He had been brought back to his home Zone (the Nameless Zone) to fight Trogg, a monster from accross the dimension bridge. Tail's knew he wasn't up to it and had only been selected for fighting Trogg because he had slightly overplayed the part he played in helping Mobius, saying that he was Mobius' hero and that Sonic was his inept sidekick. By a complete fluke, he suceeded in defeating Trogg. He left the zone and was called back again to rescue a missing Enchanter King, this time a warrior, Errol Blackthorn, went with him. It turned out, that the missing Enchanter King was Trogg himself twiste by a strange force and Tails and Errol only just escaped. Tails was called again, this time to rescue two fox cubs. Tail's next seperate adventures took place far away from the Nameless Zone and this time in Chemical Plant Zone where he helped a group of sheep known as the Flock or Zonerunners to stop a psycotic robot, Nutzan Boltz, from chemical flooding of surrounding Zones. STC48 saw the return of Tails to the Flock to stop the robot again. It was later that for the first time ever, Tails and Knuckles joined together to once again, deal with Trogg. The Enchanter Kings had been taken and Errol had been turned into a monster. After dealing with Errol, Morain, Errol's sister joined them and they rescued the Enchanter Kings and turned Errol and Trogg, back into normal people. The real turning point in for Tails came when he had to return a quick tempered mouse to his home while avoiding Fleabyte, the bounty hunter. Tails actually used his skill and intelligence to get out of the situation and from then on, he matured into what he is today. Tails breifly went on his own adventures before returning the the Freedom Fighters for a longer peroid of time. In STC104 was a landmark issue as it was the first time that Tails asked Sonic to come with him, the story was a Sonic 3D Flicky Island adaptation. Tails then started on a series of quick single part episodes which started to lower in quality, althought some were okay and one gem was the one showing Tails' first flight. However, in the main Sonic strip, he managed to save Sonic's life from a new metallix by closing an electrical door on him. He also breifly returned to the Nameless Zone, this time by Morain after the Enchanter Kings had been imprisioned in a castle. However, things turned out to be quite a bit different. From then on, Tails continued to do just single part stories with only a few strips, like the 2 parter Fall of the Leaf, to break the routine. When the reprints came in, Tails' space was taken over and he only appeared in the main Sonic strip which only sparsely featured him until the Sonic Adventure adaptation where he was with Sonic all the way. Now, Fleetway is all reprint so that's where he appears now.
Attitude Tails is innocent and optomistic. In early issues, Tails was slow thinking, frequently scared and got by more on his incredible luck then by any of his attributes. However, in time, Tails, became more clever, courageous and matured. He showed himself to be a lot tougher then a lot of people thought and he has continued to go down that track ever since.
