Review of Glen Hansard at the Lobby, Cork,
31st October, by Philip Cox., picture by David Bain

The freaks come out on Halloween don't they? Luckily down in the Lobby on Tuesday 31st of October the only freaks were the ones that missed a great night….Steve Fannigan came on first all be it in a half hearted attempt at fancy dress, he played his set well as a pre-empted strike to his debut E.P release in the same venue late in November. He appears to be one of a growing number of musicians that are making use of the essential home recording weapon that is the Mine-Disc player! These fickle little toys have a mind of their own it seems and once or twice it decided to go off in a tangent, it didn't really matter though because the intimate nature of the venue that holds no more than a hundred people (rough guess) has a unique atmosphere. Its jammed full of genuine music lovers that want to be there, and any little glitch is simply greeted with a giggle and off we go again. He played a fine set and although his minimalist approach may not be everyone's cup of tea you have to admit that he does what he does with an element of style a lot of composure and he carries it off well.
Mic Christopher up next, the ex Mary Janes man gave it loads he is a funny bloke with some great tunes. His take on the world from a kid's point of view is full of great lyrics. The man is an excellent songwriter and is truly entertaining. His decision not to take a medical stance to fancy dress is duly noted. Mic, who will be back in the Lobby with Steve late in November really got the crowd's attention with his lively tunes and presence...he makes for a top show.
Dr Hansard popped into the surgery to provide a dose of medicine. To be honest at this stage I was fairly toasted so the details are a little on the patchy side. I do remember the girl next to me doing a duet (sort of) with him...Young Hearts Run Free. You get the impression that Glen really enjoys playing in the Lobby, I think he likes these small intimate venues where he can joke with the crowd and change the songs as he sees fit. He ferociously bet the crap out of his guitar a few times no doubt adding to the holes already on it and gave us a really enjoyable show, songs like: Stars are Underground, Plateau, some of the newbees in the form of Headlong and Lay Me down, the oldies: Red Chord, Say it to me now and Denounced (with assistance from the Clonmel crowd and a good few other voices) and some fine covers, Octopussy, Last Goodbye and the afore mentioned Young Hearts….
All in all a good Halloween night, a cool venue and a top show.
