Review of the Frames at the Savoy, Cork, April 2001 by Philip Cox

Righty ho then, myself and Bainy were wondering around the back streets of Cork for two reasons, first off we were trying to figure out how the hell to get into the Savoy, secondly we were looking for a pub for some pre-gig pints.
We weren't alone cause we bumped into Glen, Mic and Josh Ritter who it appears were in a similar quandary. As it panned out the venue was above a small shopping precinct/mall effort. Very odd I thought but when we got inside we were both pleasantly surprised by this large open and fairly cool  club………
Josh came on first (fresh from the series end of Dawsons Creek), and played two types of music, country and western….only kidding he has a fine folk country thing going on.
This I the second time I've saw young Josh and  I must say he is definitely growing on me. His best song for me is Stuck On You which he closed his set with, a very funny song which blends the fundamental laws of Physics with cheesy ballad lines.
Mic Christopher that old salty-dog turned up again much to my delight. He reminds me of the Stereo MC's with all that denim. He knocked through a now familiar set  which I can now sing along to. I must say I was disappointed that he didn't play that disco song Feels like I'm In Love (WOO WOO WOO WOO). Heyday stands out for me, its such a cool song. Kids song  is another great tune the opening line "How come your sister's in drag", cracks me up every time. (I suspect the title of this song has changed but for my purpose it shall be here on referred to as Kids Song). He came, he played, he was made to sing Suspicious Minds……….
Now seems like a good time to start my campaign to have Dave Odlum installed as the leader of the mob that is known as The Frames. Hansard out!!!………..so anyway on they came and I should remember more cause I wasn't drinking but what I do remember was an odd looking young man dressed in tweed with a deerstalker hat approaching the stage during Star Star armed with a small tape recorder that had an obscure rant about eating club biscuits on it.
Now I should say that this was not the high-point of my night cause that would be a big fat lie, but giving this small detail will prevent me from repeating the same thing over and over about Headlong, Rent Day blues, Santa Maria, Revelate, Fitzcarraldo, Angel At My Table, Debaser  and all the  rest of the good stuff…….I wish this band would fuck up occasionally and have a bad gig cause its is sickeningly enjoyable going to see them.
They opened the floor  to questions from the audience which always threatens to become a spectacle for those with a need to get daft questions off of their chest but is always good fun! Oh before I forget, if anyone reading this that knows that bloody annoying woman that kept screaming please slap her for me.
If its not "show's yer nipples" its hysterical women. Bottom line The Frames were great (as always), Mic was the man and Josh A.K.A Dawson  was spot on.
Enough I can't take anymore of this, next time expect heavy criticism………..
