Train to be a Canine Beautician

Grooming dogs is a very rewarding career, which I really enjoy, but please be aware that the work can be hard and tiring at first and not all dogs are saints, Most dogs enjoy a dog at the salon and certainly feel much better at the end of a grooming session as we all would, when coming home from a day at a health spa.

Dogs like people have off days, and when they meet the groomer on an off day, well it can be challenging to say the least. The most important thing to remember is to be calm and patient.

Groomers are expected to know quite a lot about the dogs they are taking care of, health issues, temperament, coat conditions, skin problems and recognising when a dog is not feeling the best, all these things should be explained to the owner, who may or may not be aware of such things at the time of grooming.

It is important to know your breed standards, which way a certain breed should be styled, be it a pet or show dog, they all deserve special attention and plenty of hugs and cuddles.

After completing any grooming course, if you decide that you would like to sit your City & Guilds Exams, it is recommended that you have at least 18 months experience grooming dogs before going forward to sitting these exams.

Should you are interested in any of the courses I run throughout the year, please feel free to contact me by phone or email, or if you are in the area, why not drop in for a chat.

I can then send you information that you can read at your own time.

The courses run Monday to Friday 9.30 to 6p.m.

I advise anyone wishing to work in the dog grooming industry to have their Tetanus Vaccination up to date.

Grooming courses at The Grooming Pad are operate strictly on a one to one basis.  This allows the student ample time for questions, note taking and most importantly, hands on practical instruction in each dog.  Most breeds are styled to a particular style set by the kennel club, but some owners do not like this and there are several ways of obtaining a lovely finish which will be demonstrated and thought to you while on the grooming course. Instruction on the course is one to one and given by Ann Collins LCGI. My aim is to train students towards doing their City + Guilds 7750 exam on the longer courses; this is a qualification now available in Ireland, run by Pet Care Trust in England. The standard reached varies from student to student.
It is suggested that an interval of hands on grooming of 18 months be completed before taking these exams.

Students are encouraged to enter the Oster career start competition held in October every year. This is a good introduction to grooming competitions, and can only be entered once and only when you have less than 1.5 years experience in the grooming industry, but it’s great fun where you meet other groomers and make new friends.

All students on the 30 day to the four month course will be given a starter pack. Contents may vary depending on the availability at that time. Items include: Tool bag, comb, grooming jacket, nail clippers, scissors, slicker brush, and the grooming manual for cats and dogs or similar.
