27th August 2006 - County Senior Football League Division 1 Round 9 in Con Keating Park

St. Mary's 0-08 V 3-13 Kilcummin

Kilcummin confirmed their status in Division 1 for the following year with an emphatic victory over the Divisions whipping boys St. Mary’s on Sunday last in Con Keating Park. A first half which saw the visitors clock up 3 goals inside the opening 18 minutes thanks to David Brosnan, John Devane, Michael O’Connor and 8 more points in the half compared to the Mary’s 4 had Kilcummin poised for the 2 points at the break while a somewhat even second half saw Kilcummin move to 8 points and St. Mary’s rooted to the bottom of the table with a single point.

St. Mary’s were first off the mark with an Adam Quirke point after a James Fitzgerald assist but when the home side committed a foul on Shane McSweeney 1 minute later DJ Fleming was on hand to even proceedings with a 25 m free. On the 8 minute Kilcummin took control of the game when a combination of passes between Donald Dwyer and Micheal O’Connor set John Devane up in front of goal and he buried past the help less Cormac O’Shea to put his side ahead. But poor St. Mary’s marking meant Kilcummin were in for a second goal 2 minutes later when John Devane turned provider for David Brosnan and he rattled the net. St. Mary’s added two unanswered points from young Conor Moran from the right wing while good play between Darren Corcoran and Daniel O’Sullivan meant full forward Fergal O’Connell could open his scoring account of the year with a punched point. Kilcummin then took control from here on in when corner forward DJ Fleming made John Devanes job of slotting the ball between the posts very easy. It took only 8 minutes from the East Kerry’s side second goal for them to get their third of the game when Michael O’Connor found himself in front of goal and he netted to put his side ahead by 8 points after 18 minutes. John Devane, DJ Fleming (2), Richie O’Connor and Michael O’Connor all added points for Kilcummin while St. Mary’s did manage to pull one back before the break from a 35m point from James Fitzgerald but this didn’t worry the visitors as David Brosnan cancelled this out after Michael O’Connor was denied a clear cut goal chance after centre back Aidan O’Sullivan made a fantastic goal line clearance and leave the half time score Kilcummin 3-8 St. Mary’s 0-4.

It took 8 minutes of the second half for the sides to reopen their tally as Shane McSweeney punished St. Mary’s with a point from a counter attack, Donald Dwyer added two more after assists from McSweeney and Fleming while DJ Fleming added his third point of the game and substitute Danny O’Leary added his sides final point of the game and round of their sides tally to 3-13, while St. Mary’s began a late revival when they introduced Sean Cournane, 16, for his sixth appearance off the bench this year, he went straight onto the score sheet after his introduction with a point, a minute later after a foul on Conor Moran he added a close free to his tally before good link up play between Aidan O’Sullivan and substitute Ray Keane saw Fergal O’Connell get his second point of the game before Sean Cournane added the games final score with a close free after a foul on Adam Quirke to leave the final score Kilcummin 3-13 St. Mary’s 0-08.

Best on the afternoon for the victors were Kieran Fleming in goal, Tommy Brosnan, John Heirlhy, Ronan O’Connor, Shane McSweeney and Eamonn O’Donoghue at midfield, while all the forwards of Richie O’Connor, Devane, Ml O’Connor, Brosnan, Dwyer and Fleming played very well while for the Mary’s players to stand out were few and far between with Aidan O’Sullivan and Sean Cournane being the pick of the bunch. Kilcummin are now safe in the Division 1 and look forward to a clash at home to Rathmore next weekend while the Mary’s will make the journey to Gallrus to take on An Ghealtacht.
